Wisconsin Transportation – Turning the Page

In addition to featuring high-quality speakers and key issues, the TDA Annual Meeting also provides an opportunity for members to make valuable connections with others in the transportation industry.

TDA Fly-in to Washington, DC

18th Annual Fly-in
April 9-10, 2008

The TDA Fly-in is the perfect opportunity to bring Wisconsin transportation issues to our national representatives. Virtually every congressional office and both senate offices participate and look forward to this information exchange on key issues with Wisconsin's transportation stakeholders. The two days in Washington, DC literally "fly by", and participants are back in Wisconsin before they know it. It is a good, quick trip for busy schedules.

General Fly-in information
The fly-in contingent leaves Wisconsin in the morning of the first day. Upon arrival in Washington, DC, participants attend an afternoon briefing session - typically legislators and experts on the national level bring attendees up-to-date on pressing federal transportation issues. In the evening there is a group reception and dinner, a perfect opportunity for networking. The speakers at the morning session on the second day delve deeper into the issues of concern to Wisconsin's transportation community. Activities in Washington, DC culminate with the ever-popular small group office visits with Wisconsin's congressional delegation. As a past Fly-in participant commented, "One of the most impressive things about the TDA Fly-in is looking at the attendee listing. It really is a who's who in Wisconsin transportation."

2008 Fly-in Guide

TDA Drive-in to Madison

In 2006, the legislature’s bipartisan Road to the Future Committee issued a report that documented a $700 million annual transportation funding shortfall just to meet existing needs for transportation programs (not including rail, ports or air).

On the heels of this report, the governor and legislature debated and ultimately passed the 2007-09 biennial budget (Act 20). Act 20 did not restore gas tax indexing or provide any new long-range funding mechanism, but it did increase various fees enough to stem the tide of declining transportation investment. The budget also avoided transferring funds out of transportation for the first time in four years.

The Legislative Fiscal Bureau has now determined that despite the increased fees in Act 20 the transportation funding shortfall has grown to almost $1 billion due to high construction inflation.

TDA has joined with numerous other groups to urge the federal government to step-up its financial end of the partnership with the states to solve the transportation crisis. There is clearly need for increased federal financial involvement. However, Wisconsin needs to begin addressing its own daunting transportation needs.

On May 14th, participants heard from legislative leaders, a leader in Minnesota’s transportation community and executives from regional economic development entities in Wisconsin.  Click here for a newsletter summary of the event.

TDA Modal Weeks

In 2008, TDA began a new program – “modal weeks”.  TDA will declare a “Transit Week”, “Rail Week”, “Ports Week” and “Aviation Week” this year. During each of these weeks, TDA will work with relevant stakeholders and the media to highlight for the public the vital role that each particular mode plays in Wisconsin’s transportation system and thus to its economy, safety and quality of life.

Wisconsin Ports Week, August 4-10

Wisconsin Aviation Week, July 21-26

Wisconsin Transit Week, May 19-25
