Deteriorating roads and bridges, congestion, and the lack of some desirable safety features cost Wisconsin motorists a total of $6.8 billion annually and Greater Madison residents $2,139 per driver, according to a new report released today by TRIP, a Washington, D.C.- based research group that advocates for increased investment in transportation infrastructure.
The TRIP report, titled “Wisconsin Transportation by the Numbers: Meeting the State’s Need for Safe, Smooth and Efficient Mobility,” says that in Madison, the resulting cost comes in the form of higher vehicle operating costs, traffic crashes, and congestion-related delays.
Throughout Wisconsin, the report found that one-half of major locally and state-maintained roads are in poor or mediocre condition and 9% of locally and state-maintained bridges are structurally deficient.
