8/4/25, WMTV-15 – Local leaders in Waterloo are hoping to make serious improvement on two of the city’s key highways.
Mayor Jenifer Quimby and other community leaders led a tour to show some of the aging roadways on Highways 89 and 19, which impact the city’s quality of life and vitality.
The City of Waterloo joined the statewide effort “Re-VITAL-ize”, which aims to show how vital these infrastructure projects are for residents and businesses.
While there was an increase in funding for the State Highway Rehabilitation Program and an inflationary adjustment for general transportation aid, Waterloo officials said there is no long-term solution to maintain transportation project funding. This could lead to delays in local projects.
“Every community’s got the same problem,” Quimby said. “We can’t afford to fix every single road every year, and when major highway projects come in, even though we need them fixed, you’re at the mercy of them to get them done on their schedule.”
The Waterloo community is excited that WisDOT has scheduled improvements set for the highways, which Quimby said will upgrade the 75-year-old water and sewer infrastructure.
